The plain green and white walls of the hospital are usually welcoming sight to Cammie, as they foretell a new discovery or challenge for her to tackle. This time, however, they were an ominous omen as Cammie sat in the waiting room for once. Any other time she was in a hospital, she was working there, never one to fall victim and need the hospital. Her gut sank as she continued to relive the moment of Mikayla's symptoms again and again. She held her head and screamed mentally in agony. Vividly, she saw Mikayla's body convulse as Cammie herself stood, watching and unable to help.
Argh! What is wrong with me!? I've seen people die lots of time. What was so different this time? Cammie stood up and slammed her fist against the wall. Why couldn't I do anything either? I was just... frozen in fear. I don't understand. I've never been like this before. I'm a mercenary. I should be able to handle any sight, any smell, anything.
Cammie sighed and sat back down in a chair. She held her head in her hands. Mikayla had just been admitted less than three minutes ago, but Cammie couldn't help but feel guilty about the incident. Today just spiraled out of control once the trial began. Now, not only was Mikayla on the brink of death, but their client was most certainly going to be found guilty. It didn't help that the trial wasn't going to continue today either, taking up one of the precious five trials they needed. Cammie pulled out her sCAn Pad and made a note of the evidence that Magdalena had submitted. There wasn't anyone else in the waiting room, except for the nurse behind the desk, and she was busy with work. Cammie sighed again and closed her eyes, gripping her sCAn Pad tightly.
"That's a rather fancy device you have there." said a familiar voice from behind Cammie. Startled, she jumped from her chair and turned to face the voice, ready to attack. "Whoa, be careful there. No need to be so tense." Cammie found herself facing none other than Martin. She took a deep breath and calmed herself down.
"You startled me there." Cammie said, clutching her sCAn Pad to her chest.
"Sorry Madam. Didn't mean to." Martin replied, fiddling with his bolo tie. "Sorry I was't here earlier. Had a little bit of paperwork I needed to fill out."
Cammie nodded. "I understand, Martin." Her expression grew saddened again at the thought of Mikayla.
"You seem to have something on your mind. Do you wish to talk about it?" Martin asked in a cool and calming way.
"Actually, there were a few things I wanted to discuss with you." Cammie stated, preparing her sCAn Pad.
"I'm all ears to listen and I'll tell you what I can about something." Martin replied, finishing fiddling with his bolo tie and focused his attention to Cammie.
"Tell me about Mikayla. What is she like?" Cammie asked, opening a notepad section titled "Mikayla".
"Mikayla is certainly a very interesting person for anyone to meet. She has an unusual, how shall I say this, aura to her. People just tend to feel very calm and relaxed around her." Martin began to fiddle with his bolo tie again.
That's true. When I first met Mikayla, she did feel like a person to trust. I opened up a bit more to her than I would have normally done so with any other strange, but something about her was oddly calming.
"She tends to be very thoughtful and caring, especially if it comes to clients. Mikayla always had a very commited faith to her clients, truly believing in them, even against all odds. I, myself, have always been more of an evidence-first sort of person. That said, I have to give credit to Mikayla. With or without her ability, she's certainly not someone to get on the wrong side of."
"Mikayla's ability, can you tell me more about that?" Cammie asked, intrigued to get more information.
"I only know so much about it. I do know that it pretty much turns her into a human lie detector. She can point out subconscious twitches in a person, changes in their voice, and press them for the answer. It's an amazing ability. Even I'm not sure how she does it. It may have something to do with her hightened sensetivity, but even the doctors aren't certain."
"I see. You certainly seem to hold Mikayla on a good level." Cammie noted.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I? She's a very dear sister, and I hope that they can save her in time." Martin stopped fiddling with his bolo tie and looked Cammie dead in the eyes. "I swear to you that if I ever find out who did this to Mikayla, there will be no mercy in that courtroom." Cammie nodded, understanding how someone could feel so fierce about retribution.
"I wanted to ask you, what is with the tension between Mikayla and Magdalena? You two seem to well enough terms, so what happened between those two?" Cammie asked, ready to record the answer.
"I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but I actually used to have three sisters," Martin stated.
"I do know about your other sister, Maddie. She was the town's mayor before she was murder," Cammie replied.
"I see you are well informed. Not surprising coming from a scientist like yourself." Martin began to fiddle with his bolo tie again. "You see, Mikayla headed the investigation that looked into Maddie's murder. As I'm sure you're aware, she found evidence that put Maddie's fiancee, Isaac, away." Cammie nodded, and Martin continued. "Magdalena came herself to aid Mikayla in investigation. This, however, became the wedge that split them apart. While Mikayla found the evidence in the lighter that implicated Isaac as the killer, Magdalena had found evidence that implicated Catalina as the killer. With my permission, and a little string pulling, the two of them clashed at each other in the courtroom. Mikayla even accused Magdalena of presenting forged evidence, a mark on Magdalena's reputation I know will never fade. In the end, Magdalena's evidence was proved to be fake, but not by her doing, but by Isaac in order to frame Catalina. The killer was put behind bars, but Magdalena was forever blemished with that error and the two of them have been at each other's throats since then." Martin sighed and stopped fiddling with his bolo tie.
"I see. I wouldn't have thought that something such as that would have caused them to be at such cross terms." Cammie mentioned, finishing up her notes.
"Magdalena held Mikayla in such a high regard. She greatly respected her sister for her gift and her ability to hold her own in court. That day in court greatly wounded that respect she had." Martin explained, fiddling with his bolo tie.
"I understand." Cammie finished her note and then proceeded to create another one. This one was title "Martin". "Tell me about yourself, Martin."
"Is there anything specifically you wanted to know?" Martin asked, fiddling with his bolo tie.
"Tell me about your legal career."
"Ah, yes, I take it you've heard that I've never lost a case, correct?" Cammie nodded. "I'll admit, I've been called a prodigy so many times I've lost count."
"You have?" Cammie asked, not particularly too surprised.
"Yes, by very many people, in fact. After all," Martin stopped fiddling with his bolo tie, "No criminal will ever escape my grasp." Cammie nodded in understanding.
"So, do you always lead up the prosecution, or do you also be the defense for cases?"
Martin began to fiddle with his bolo tie. "I mainly prefer the prosecution side. However, if I can't find the evidence to convict someone, I'll take the defense to make sure that no innocent people ever get convicted."
Cammie nodded and jotted it down in her notes. "So, what did you think about the trail of Isaac?"
"I must admit, I was certainly shocked at all of it. First, that one of my dear sister's died, then that the murder was her own fiancee... it was just tragic," Martin continued to fiddle with his bolo tie.
"What about with Catalina? Did you believe that Catalina did it?"
"I did think that, at first. However, as the trial went on, the evidence against Catalina turned against Isaac. Mikayla is an amazing lawyer, and the fact that she managed to completely turn the case around and convict the true killer is nothing to sneeze at. I just feel sorry that Mikayla has such a large loss record due to facing me."
"So, Mikayla has never won a case against you, but has against others? Is it just bad luck that the clients she gets are guilty when she faces you in court?" Cammie asked, slightly intrigued.
Martin stopped fiddling with his bolo tie and stared intently at Cammie. "Like I said before, I don't let criminals get away. Mikayla may lose her cases, but she does help to convict the true criminal. After all, that is why we are here. It's not about winning or losing, it's about protecting."
"I understand, Martin. Can you tell me about Maddie?" Cammie asked, preparing another note.
"Ah, Maddie, she was such a wonderful sister. She was always on top of things, no matter what was demanded. Political issues were nothing to her. Everyone loved her, well, almost everyone," Martin explained.
"You're referencing Isaac killing her, right?" Cammie asked.
"Yes, that's correct," Martin clarified, "We still aren't sure why Isaac killer her. He wouldn't talk when we questioned him. Some people just won't confess their crimes. That then, is when words and evidence are the only weapons to use."
"Despite the evidence, Isaac still hadn't confessed?"
"Not a word. Still, the evidence spoke for him. I believe he still has around ten or so years left," Martin explained.
Cammie nodded and finished up her notes. She tucked her sCAn Pad away into her jacket. "I think that's all the questions I have for you."
Martin nodded and proceeded to fiddle with his bolo tie. "You know, Mikayla has actually already said quite a lot about you, Cammie."
Cammie gave Martin a surprised look. "Really? But, we haven't even known each other for a week. How much could she have possibly said?"
I seriously hope that she didn't tell Martin about that note I recieved. Only Mikayla, Tyler, and I are supposed to know about its existence. If she told Martin, we may have added a potential victim to this killer's path.
"She told me about your meeting on the train, your tour of the museum and the town, and just how must she looked forward to working with you." Martin grinned as he recalled his conversation with Mikayla. Cammie was very surprised at this news.
I can't believe that Mikayla would be so interested in working together. I wonder what's caused her to look so forw-
Cammie's line of thought was interuppted as the doors of the waiting area were flung open. From inside the hospital came a youg man, about 28. Like Cammie, he was also wearing a white lab coat, but adorned above his heart was a doctoral badge. Below that was the doctor's signature stitched into the coat, illegible as was most. He had wavy dark grey hair that reached just below his ears. A rather rough cut beard was visible on his chin. The man's caramel eyes were soft and calming, his eyes giving off a sense of relaxation. He wasn't as tall as some others, though Cammie estimated he stood about 5' 7". Underneath the man's lab coat was a dark red shirt. His slacks were dark grey, but a lighter grey than his hair. The shoes he wore were black, but reflective as well. He walked over to the two of them and spoke with a relaxed tone.
"Ah, Martin. I figured you'd be here, but," the man turned to Cammie, "I don't recognize this young lady."
"Hello Doctor Octavio. This is Cammie." Martin gestured to Cammie and she nodded to the doctor.
"Hello. Are you the doctor who's in charge of Mikayla's case?" Cammie asked, concern permeating in her voice.
"That's right. Pleasure to meet you, Cammie." Doctor Octavio extended his hand to her, but she politely declined.
"As much as I am for pleasantries, I'm more concerned with Mikayla's wellbeing," Cammie explained.
"Ah, yes. I have good news and bad news," Doctor Octavio stated, reaching into his jacket for a dossier. "The good news is that Mikayla isn't dead." Cammie and Martin both sighed a huge sigh of relief. "Well, yet, that is."
"Y-Yet?" Martin exclaimed in concern.
Doctor Octavio handed Martin the dossier before continuing. "You see, Mikayla had a poisoning level of 4.99mg. Right along the boarder of death."
"So, she should be okay then, right?" Martin asked, glancing over the dossier.
"Well, not quite. Mikayla could either die from the poisoning or survive. We've done all we can." Doctor Octavio explained.
"I... understand." Martin closed the dossier and began to walk outside. "Excuse me, but I need a moment or two." With that, he exited the hospital.
"Losing Maddie to BoD and now possibly Mikayla, I can understand the pain he's going through." Doctor Octavio closed his eyes and sighed.
"So, if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a few questions." Cammie stated, pulling back out her sCAn Pad.
"Go right ahead. I'll answer what I can."
"Tell me about this BoD poison. I can't say I've ever heard of it."
"It would makes sense that you haven't. It's a very taboo topic in the medical world. BoD is extremely potent, and any cases regarding it are highly classified as is the chemical itself."
"How classified are we talking about?" Cammie asked.
"On the same level of biological warfare," Doctor Octavio stated, but almost as if it was a casual topic.
"By extremely potent, how potent do you mean?" Cammie questioned.
"It takes about 5.00mg to kill the average person. Only half of that amount if the person is younger than 20." A look of shock came across Cammie's face.
5.00mg is lethal. That's astoundingly terrifying. I mean, not as lethal as, say, ricin, but still...
"However," Doctor Octavio added, "it has to enter the body via a vessel."
"A vessel?"
"Yes, like a drop of water or a piece of candy. BoD cannot be used in an aerosol form. Essentially, it has to be ingested," Doctor Octavio explained.
"And when Maddie smoked from a cigarette that had some of it in it..."
"Yes, that would be considered ingestion."
I wonder if Snipe ever had used BoD to assassinate anyone. Cammie thought to herself.
"Thankfully, we have managed to find a cure for it. It's a rare plant known as the Waclan that only grows in the Hacienda Heights. We keep a large supply of it here in the hospital in case we get any victims of it," Doctor Octavio continue to explain. "You know, I just recalled something. Hang on, would you." With that, Doctor Octavio walked back into the hospital wing. He returned a few minutes later with a piece of laminated paper. "Here, for you."
"What's this?" Cammie asked, taking the paper.
"It's an info card about all that we known about BoD. We give these out so people know the warnings of BoD so we can treat the victims."
Cammie looked over the card carefully. Much of what Doctor Octavio had explained was on the paper, but there were a few things that the doctor didn't touch upon. It made mention of how it kills in 20 minutes, what the chemical name is, cough drops can keep it at bay, only the rare Waclan plant can cure BoD poisoning, BoD is lethal at 5.00mg, and that BoD had to be ingested via a vessel. However, there was point that caught Cammie's attention. "What does it mean by 'Lethality Dissolvability: Same until 5.00L'?"
"Ah, that. Yes, that's a brand new property we just discovered. BoD is soluble in water, but, it has a unique property when dissolved."
"Unique property?" Cammie asked, intrigued.
"Yes. You see, when dissolved in a solution smaller than 5.00L, the entire solution has the same lethality."
"Wait, what does that mean?" Cammie questioned.
"For example, if I were to put 3.00mg of BoD in 4.00L of water, every single part, no matter where, of the water has the same effect as 3.00mg of BoD. Thankfully, we have also found that it does not stack, so if you were to ingest two different sections of that solution, you'd only have poisoning equal to 3.00mg of BoD. Understand?" Doctor Octavio said.
"Yes, I understand. That certainly is an unusual property." Cammie said.
"However, once the solution it's being put into becomes larger than 5.00L, you need much more to get the same effect. Otherwise, imagine if that got into the water supply of anywhere. A little bit would then be able to kill entire cities and no one could ever use that water."
"I see. After 5.00L, how much would you need to get the same dissolve effect?" Cammie asked.
"It all depends on how much solution you have and to what effect you want to have then. It's still a very new property. In fact, you got the first info card with that information. Just printed those today. Outside of this hospital, no one else really knows that fact." Doctor Octavio said. Cammie nodded in understanding. She took a picture of the paper with her sCAn Pad and tucked them both away into her jacket.
"I believe that's all the questions I have for you right now." Cammie said. Doctor Octavio nodded to her. I guess that I better see if Martin will let me take a look at Mikayla's repo-
Cammie was interrupted when the doors of the hospital flew open. Walking in with an ominous tone to her walk was Magdalena, accompanied by several officers. In her mouth was her feather and she stared intently at Cammie.
"Is something wrong?" Doctor Octavio asked in a calm tone.
"You could sort of say that, Doc. Cammie," Magdalena shouted, pointing her finger at Cammie, "you're under arrest for the poisoning of Mikayla Barquette! Come quietly or we will use force!"

She can point out subconscious twitches in a person, changes in their voice, and press them for the answer. It's an amazing ability. Even I'm not sure how she does it.
