After eating and paying for a fillling breakfast, Cammie and Mikayla started to make their way to Tyler's office. He was waiting for them and had Cammie's paper work in his hand.
"So, I've been looking over this. I just need to confirm a few things with you, without Mikayla." Tyler began, looking at the paper work. Cammie took a seat, as did Mikayla. Cammie tried her best to mask her desire to talk to Tyler without Mikayla's presence being an issue.
"With all due respect Tyler, Cammie is my asssitant. If you are going to be discussing about the paper work and such involving her as my assistant, I respectfully ask to be in the room." Mikayla stated, slightly disappointing Cammie.
"Cammie, is this alright with you?" Tyler asked, shifting his gaze from Mikayla to Cammie.
"Yes, I am fine with this." Cammie nodded, not breaking her gaze to Tyler.
"Now then, it says here that you are a scientist, correct?" Cammie nodded. "Would you mind going into further details? You didn't give much in this paper work about your field."
"I am a forensic scientist. I have also dabbled in the paranormal field, but that is nothing worth my time, from what I've found." Cammie looked off into the distance, recalling the bizarre series of events that had happened only two years ago. But those events are for another day, and have no relevance to what's at hand.
"Cammie, you alright?" Mikayla asked, tapping Cammie on the shoulder. Cammie was a little startled, coming back out of her thoughts. She looked at Mikayla and nodded.
"Yeah, I'm alright. I was just thinking about something, that's all." Cammie stated, attempting to sway their thoughts away from asking about the events on Galupeagus. "It's not important. The paranormal is just dabbling, and that's it. It's nothing compared to the actual science I get done."
"Please, enlighten us more on what 'actual science' you get done." Tyler requested. Cammie nodded and continued her story.
"My main field of study is, as I stated before, forensics. I have incredible expertise in chemistry and the subsequent fields that follow, such as biochemistry." Cammie stated firmly, sitting up right. "Does this town have any sort of chemistry lab?" Tyler shook his head. "Alright then, I'll have to make due using my cheimistry knowledge without a lab."
"So, what kind of discoveries have you made?" Mikayla asked, curiosity filled her voice.
"Well, I've helped to solve the mystery of how this special musical amp had subconsciously controlled people, and helped to clear up the radiation from the nuclear blast." Cammie said, trying not to seem boastful. Tyler nodded and looked back at the paper work.
"So, Mikayla tells me you tendency to, as she puts it, 'lose your composure'. Is this a regular thing with you that I have to be concerned about?" Tyler mentioned, shifting his gaze from Cammie to Mikayla. Cammie looked at Mikayla, who gave Cammie a somewhat stern expression.
"Sorry Cammie, but it's an important matter that needs to be touched upon." Mikayla said, looking closely at Cammie's face. Cammie sighed and turned her gaze back to Tyler.
"Well, you see, many of the things, and people here, are very new to me, and have new concepts I'm still trying to learn. An example this morning was Catalina and her rule of no gossip or losing efficiency. Once I get used to being around here, me 'losing my composure' will be a thing of the past." Cammie reassured them both. Tyler nodded and looked back at the paper work.
"Well, I do believe that is all the questions I have for you now. If that will be all, you two have an investigation to continue." Tyler said, putting the paper work into a filing cabinet. Mikayla nudged Cammie and gestured to her.
"Ah, yes, Tyler, there was something, actually, two things that i wanted to talk to you about." Cammie reached for the letter in her coat and Mikayla looked ready for Tyler's response, then turned back to Cammie.
"Wait, two things? I thought we were only going to ask about that letter." Mikayla asked, clearly puzzled.
"What letter?" Tyler asked, looking back from the filing cabinet. Cammie pulled out the letter and placed it on his desk. Tyler sat back down and looked over the letter. A look of concern crossed his face. "When did you get this?"
"Just yesterday night. I can't give an exact time estimate, nor did I get a good look at who it was. The person did, however, attack Yarren with a taser." Cammie reported. Tyler nodded in understanding.
"How is he?"
"He is well. Cammie and Yolanda attended to his wounds while the ambulance came. Yolanda said that Cammie and her did such a good job, there wasn't much left for the doctors to do and just said he needed to rest. Yarren is currently resting at the Backfoot Motel." Mikayla told Tyler. Tyler nodded and looked back at Cammie.
"You said there were two things you wanted to talk to me about. What was the other thing?"
"Ah, yes. I was curious as to how the trial system works here. Is it a jury, or what?" Cammie asked, opening her journal to take notes.
"Yes, that will be important for you to know as Mikayla's court assistant." Tyler stated, shifting his gaze back to Mikayla.
"Court assistant? I thought I was her sheriff assistant." Cammie asked, inquisitive about this status of hers.
"You are, but there are some things you need to know. For starters, we use a sole judge system. This means there is no jury, just the judge who decides either guilty or innocent." Cammie nodded in understanding.
"So, what's this about a court assistant. Is it important?"
"You see, Mikayla's brother, Martin, is both a prosecutor and a defense attorney." Tyler started.
"That's legally allowed here?"
"Yes. He has also never lost a case before." Mikayla quipped.
"Never lost a case before? How is that possible?" Cammie questioned, jotting down that Martin had never lost a case.
"There are two, well, rather, three reasons, that Martin always wins. First of all, he has Magdalena. She is a well-renouned homicide detective, though she is clearly capable of handaling civilian cases. Her expertise allows her to make sure that Martin has enough evidence on his side to make a case and counter any objections from the defense. Speaking of defense," Tyler shifted his gaze to Mikayla, "Martin always faces against Mikayla."
"Mikayla's a defense attorney and a prosecutor?" Cammie asked, looking back at Mikayla.
"No, she's not. Officially that is. Due to the nuclear blast, the population of lawyers are scarce. To compensate, and so we can have fair trials, Mikayla was trained and is an unofficial one. Despite Martin's streak, Mikayla does, in fact, hold her own very well in court. Her unique ability to read tells and decipher what they mean is a powerful asset. Even when she doesn't use that ability, Mikayla is no idiot. She's nearly defeat Martin, and has, in fact, won cases against other lawyers." Tyler explained further.
"Really? Wow, that's really impressive, Mikayla. That gift of yours, I'd love to learn more about it." Cammie said, with a hint of intrigue. "So, then what could the third reason be?"
"You, or specifically, a court assistant. They help the lawyers to run tests on evidence, compare notes, gather data, and other such tasks. However, since Mikayla has lacked one, due to not being assigned one officially, this has put her at a slight disadvantage, being unable to get certain evidence that would have swayed the case in her favor." Cammie looked at Mikayla, who smiled back at her.
"Oh, before one of us forgets to mention, there are three ways to extend a case. Usually it's the defense that has to do this. I can't really see a prosecutor doing this. First of all, you can prove that your client could not have done the deed they are charged with. Second, you can prove that another person could have done it, or sometimes, couldn't have done it. Finally, you can over turn the process of how the deed was done as the other side states. I know they all sound like the same thing, but it's actually not." Mikayla explained, waiting patiently for Cammie to finish her notes. When Cammie looked up from her notes to listen further, Tyler picked up the explaination.
"If you do one of those three things successfully, the judge will extend the trial another day, allowing further investigation. However, the trial may only be extended four times in this manner."
"What!?" Cammie nearly shouted, "Only at max five days total to solve a crime!? That's an outrage!"
"It's the way that our judicial system has been worked. If you want to change it, you'll have to fight the law using the law." Tyler flatly stated. Cammie huffed and crossed her arms.
"Don't worry Cammie. They usually aren't consecutive days, leaving a few days in between for the investigation. It just means only a maximum of five times in court." Mikayla assured her. Cammie sighed and looked back at Tyler.
"So, how long do we have until the first day of trial for the murder?"
"Magdalena will call Mikayla once the trial set up is complete, such as getting the courtroom and judge and all that other things are taken care of."
"Sis always gives me a a phone call the day before the trial will be, usually around noon. Once trial day starts, though, means no more out investigating. I'll give you a time to meet at my office so we can go. Make sure you have breakfast." Mikayla smiled and Cammie gave back a slight one.
"Alright, I think I understand." Cammie put away her journal and turned backed to Tyler. "However, we still have a problem. We don't have any other leads besides the ripped ticket. Even that threat letter I got is typed, so that doesn't give any clues of who typed it. Do you think Magdalena will let us look at the crime scene?" Cammie asked, directing her attention back to Mikayla.
"Not likely. Magdalena often seals off the crime scene when she's on the job from others. This way, Martin gets the bulk of the evidence that helps him. She might share some information with us if we ask, though I doubt it until there's a defendant." Mikayla stated, slightly disappointing Cammie. "There shouldn't be that much harm in asking though. She's probably at the crime scene now."
"Alright then. Tyler, if there's nothing more, we'll take our leave." Cammie said, standing up. Tyler nodded for Cammie and Mikayla to leave. Mikayla grabbed her hat and the two of them left for the crime scene. It didn't take them long to reach the crime scene, and as to be expected, Magdalena's forces were all over the scene.
"Sorry, no unauthorized personal." A police officer told Cammie and Mikayla firmly. Mikayla huffed and crossed her arms.
"Can we at least talk to my sister?" Mikayla asked nicely. The police officer nodded and spoke into his walkie-talkie. Magdalena approched the three of them after just a few minutes.
"Look, I'm busy Mikayla. Make it quick." Magdalena firmly stated, glaring at the two of them. "You, police officer," She gestured to the police man that had stopped Cammie and Mikayla, "Be ready to throw them out when I say so." The man nodded and Cammie felt a little unease settle.
"We were wondering if you had any information about the murder that you'd share with us." Mikayla said.
"And why would I give you that information?"
"Well, if you aren't just going to give us the information, how about we ask you a few questions? Is that alright?" Cammie was rather anxious to see Mikayla use her ability, and hopefully she'd use them on her sister.
Magdalena huffed and looked at Mikayla. "Alright, I'll share, but I'm very busy. I can only answer about...three questions now." Cammie and Mikayla nodded in understanding. Mikayla looked at Cammie and Cammie pulled out her journal.
"First question," Cammie started, "What is the exact murder weapon?"
"From the ballistics markings we found from the wound, we have concluded that it is most likely a rifle. Very high-powered from the looks of it. However, we are lacking the bullet that took the man's life, so we cannot say for certain what model of rifle." Magdalena said, waiting for Cammie to finish her notes. Mikayla didn't make any sort of comment, so Cammie continued with her questioning.
"Did the report come back of the identity of the victim?" Cammie already knew the answer to this, but Mikayla would definitely have her suspicions of Cammie.
"No. The reports came back matching no one in the data bases. None of us can identify the victim, so, until we get an identity, he is to be known as 'John Doe'." Magdalena seems a tad irritated. Mikayla picked up on it, but she said nothing. Cammie wondered if Mikayla was even using her gift on her sister.
"Alright, final question, do you have any ideas of who killed John?" This was sure to excite some sort of reaction from Magdalena. There was a long pause before she responded.
"No, I have no idea who did this." Magdalena stated flately.
This time, Mikayla did say something. "Sis, don't lie to us, well, me."
"What are you talking about Mikayla? I have no idea who did this." Magdalena reiterated, but Mikayla wouldn't let up.
"When you mention about having 'no idea', you gulp. Sign of a guilty conscious trying to protect someone?" Mikayla interrogated.
Magdalena kept her steely resolve. "No. Who would I need to protect? There hasn't been enough evidence to direct to anyone."
"Stop lying, Sis! You are hiding something. And I think I know what it is."
"You do, Mikayla?" Cammie asked, surprised.
"Yes, but, I wonder... Cammie, do you know it?" Mikayla shifted her gaze from Madgalena to Cammie, and Magdalena focused her gaze to Cammie.
"Alright, well, let's see..." Cammie said, trying to organize her thoughts.
If Magdalena was hiding something, then that would mean she either knew the person who was killed, knew the person who was the killer, or found evidence that would shift guilt to someone. Obviously Magdalena didn't know Snipe, or she would have been able to recognize him, so either she knew the killer or she found evidence. Cammie pondered how the gulping related to what she was hiding. It could possibly have related to the throat, such as eating or singing.
Wait, perhaps that was it. There wasn't a lot of evidence right now, but she had to go on her hunch this time. "I think I got it. Magdalena, you have an idea who it was because you have evidence that points to someone. Someone that you knew, and it was someone who you have distinct memories with that involve the diner. That's why you gulp when you said you have no idea!"
"Wh-WHAT!? H-How!?" This time, it was Magdalena who lost her composure. She tensed up and a look of shock came across her face.
Mikayla smiled at Cammie. "Nice job, Cammie. Now, tell us Sis."
Magdalena stood straight back up and look at the two of them. "Alright, fine then." She cleared her throat, then continued. "Yes, I did find some clues. No, there wasn't anything conclusive, but, there was something interesting." Magdalena reached into her coat and pulled out an evidence bag. Inside of it was a matchbox with the logo "C+C". "You may look at it, but not keep it, or I'll arrest you." Cammie and Mikayla nodded, and Cammie drew it down in her journal.
"This matchbox, isn't it only at Carlos's Bar?" Mikayla noted. Magdalena nodded and continued.
"Yes. Unlike Catalina's diner, only a handful of people go to the bar. I'm not at liberty to say any more details regarding the matchbox." As she spoke, another police man came and whispered something in her ear. "Sorry Mikayla, Cammie, but I need that back." She took the matchbox back and placed it in her coat. "Now, I have work to be done. Go away or I'll have you thrown out." Mikayla and Cammie nodded in understandment and walked away, back to town.
"Well, time to hit the bar."
"So, I've been looking over this. I just need to confirm a few things with you, without Mikayla." Tyler began, looking at the paper work. Cammie took a seat, as did Mikayla. Cammie tried her best to mask her desire to talk to Tyler without Mikayla's presence being an issue.
