"Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 29th Battle of the Bands Year-Long Extravaganza!" shouted an exuberant announcer from the TV. A roar of applause came from the audience. Ivanna and Gisella sat on the couch watching the TV while Larissa prepared some snacks for the three of them. "This year is going to be amazing, for this year, we've got a whopping total of..." The announcer paused for a drum roll. Larissa returned with a bowl of popcorn and some lemonade for the three of them. Ivanna took a glass and took a drink of lemonade. "...2048 bands bands competing statewide!" Ivanna gagged a bit at the surprise, quickly setting down her glass.
"What!? That many!?"
Larissa and Gisella just looked at the TV, their mouths agape. "We picked from the best bands that have yet to be heard, so get ready to hear something new! We have people from all over the state of Utah, so prepare your airwaves, people!" The audience cheered for a bit until the announcer calmed them down.
"I can't believe we were picked to participate," Gisella said, jaw still to the floor.
"Now then, let me explain the rules for those of you tuning in for the first time. This is a Battle of the Bands competition. Bands will be split up into brackets like a tournament, which will be posted on the website soon after this broadcast is over. Each band should be sent an email with their specific log-in information. Bands will submit videos to the website of them performing their songs. Then, you, the people not in a band, will vote for which band you think should move on to the next round. Voting for each session ends on the 15th of each month, so there's plenty of time to make your decision. However, there is also a little twist. We may possibly call on a band and their opponent and make them perform live, amp vs amp! The winner of those two will be determined right then and right there. The winner of each bracket will win a large prize! The competition starts...now!"
Ivanna shut off the TV and rushed over to her computer nearby. She quickly typed into the keyboard and brought up her email. She furiously typed away at the keyboard, focused on getting the details.
"Wow, that many bands in this competition, mon." Larissa stammered, "Do we even have a good chance of competing?"
"Now Larissa, come on, we have to be positive! Eyes on the prize girls!" Gisella shouted, trying to motivate Ivanna and Larissa, as well as herself.
"Looks like all the brackets right now are split up into steps of twelve."
"What do you mean by steps of twelve, mon?"
"I think Ivanna means that there are twelve stages in the competition, meaning we have to face twelve other bands in order to win this."

"Well, I still have nothing for a song idea," Gisella complained, tuning her orange and black bass guitar. It wasn't particularly an interesting bass guitar, but it was a something that Gisella treasured. Ivanna sat in a chair in the corner of Larissa's room tuning her guitar while Larissa kept a steady beat on the drums.
"I thought heart breaks were an excellent source for musical inspiration," Ivanna stated, strumming her fingers across the strings. She sighed and leaned back. Her black guitar with flame decals was a gift from her sister, and she was adept in playing it. When it came to coming up with a song, however, Ivanna definitely fell short.
Larissa hummed softly to herself, her eyes closed. She looked like she was about to play a tune, but she held herself back. It was as if she couldn't get something right in her head. Ivanna knew Larissa was in her own little tuning world and turned to Gisella.
"So, you don't have any ideas for a song?"
"No, I'm sorry." Gisella sighed and flopped onto Larissa's bed. Papers of failed lyrics and sheet music scattered around the room. "Sorry, I'll pick those up, Larissa." However, Larissa wasn't paying any attention. Her focus was on some tune she was trying to get right in her head.
"We tried songs about rain, revenge, riots, and nothing good has come up." Ivanna rubbed her temples and sighed. "Why is inspiration taunting us?"
"I wish I knew, Ivanna." Gisella turned to Ivanna's laptop. "A lot of bands have already posted their videos and got quite a few votes."
"Remind me who we are up against in the first round?"
"Umm... some group called the Cat Daddies. Sounds jazzy."
Ivanna sighed and stood up, stretching. She took off her guitar and set it in the corner. "Well, I don't think I'm going to get any inspiration just sitting here anymore. I'm going to go talk a walk... maybe a jog." With that, Ivanna left, shutting the door behind her.
Gisella sighed. Maybe I didn't think this revenge scheme all the way through. She shuffled through the failed lyrics and note sheets, finding nothing satisfactory. Maybe if I just start playing, something will come to me? It was worth a shot and was better than nothing. Gisella grabbed her jade green pick and started plucking random strings, hoping to get some sort of tune. After about ten minutes of just discord notes and Larissa's drumming, Gisella gave up. She closed her eyes and sighed again.
This is going to be a lot harder than I thought.

"Hey, did you hear about the Cat Daddies' song?" asked a man from across the counter at the Five Point Dine to a woman.
"Yeah, I did. That smooth jazz is so calming," the woman responded.
"I think I heard that same song being played at the spa that I went to yesterday," chimed in another woman.
"What about the band they are competing against?" asked the first woman.
"I haven't heard anything about them," the man replied.
"I heard they just barely got into the competition by a very slim margin."
"Yeah, if they win this competition, why, I'll eat my hat then!" The man waved his hat around until the second woman calmed him down.
"And advantage, Cat Daddies." Gisella sighed and rubbed her leg brace.
"Great, we don't even have a song idea and our opponents are already getting a fan base," Ivanna complained, drinking down a glass of Caribbean Splash, "and Larissa has been distracted by some tune in her head for the past week. Hey Larissa, mind sharing with us?"
Larissa was brought out of her thoughts and looked at Ivanna. "Sorry, did you say something, mon?"
"Yeah, what's the tune you've been keeping to yourself?" Gisella asked, sipping some of her Caribbean Splash.
"It's nothing set in stone, mon. Just a bit of a beat I got." Larissa started to tap out the beat with her knife, but she kept stopping once she started getting into it. "I just can't get the next part to sound right."
Ivanna sighed and finished her drink. She looked at her glass and chuckled. "Yeesh, Gisella and I alone will make Larissa a millionaire with how much Caribbean Splash we drink. What do you even put in this, anyways?"
Larissa laughed and twirled her knife. "Sorry, Ivanna, but that's my little secret, mon." The two of them shared a laugh while Gisella finished her drink.
Gisella sighed and drummed her fingers across the counter. Ivanna started to clink her glass with Gisella's when Larissa's eyes suddenly widened. She started to drum a tune with her knife against the grill. It started soft at first, but then got increasingly complex. "I had this little ditty stuck in my head, but I couldn't get it right at first, mon. Finally, I figured out the beat." Larissa kept the beat steady with her knife and her foot, knocking in rhythmic harmony. She quickly pulled out a menu and began to carve into it, so as not to forget the tune.
"Hey, that's a pretty cool beat you girls got over there," said the man from across the counter, "You three should participate in the Battle of the Bands."
Larissa smirked at Ivanna and Gisella. "Looks like we got a song on our hands, mon."

"How do you not know how to work your own camera?" Gisella asked, exasperated.
"Hey, I haven't used it a long time, mon. Cut me some slack!" Larissa responded, fiddling with the buttons on her jet black camera.
"Chill, Gisella. We're going to have plenty of time to record our song. I still can't believe we came up with it so fast after that horrible writers block." Ivanna tuned her guitar and strummed a few chords. "We should feel lucky we came up with a song in the first place."
The camera beeped while Larissa fiddled with it, pressing random buttons in an effort to get it to record. "Why is this thing so unnecessarily complex, mon?"
"Why did you buy such an unnecessarily complex camera?" Ivanna asked.
Larissa sighed and put the camera on a desk nearby, beeping as it was set down. She picked up one of her drum sticks and twirled it in her fingers. "So, did you two come up with a name for the song, mon?"
"Well, we came up with two ideas," Ivanna said, shuffling through some papers, "Either 'Rock the Starting Line' or 'Bring on the Band.' What do you think, Larissa?"
Larissa twirled her drum stick and rested her head on the wall behind her. "I like 'Bring on the Band' a bit better, mon. Just seems fit with the tune of the song better."
"Alright, so, that's agreed then. Our new song will be called 'Bring on the Band,'" Ivanna said, strumming a few chords. She quickly transitioned into a short riff, finishing with a power chord.
"Ooh! How'd you do that riff Ivanna? We can keep that for next month's song," Gisella said, scribbling notes down on a scrap piece of paper.
Ivanna repeated the riff while Larissa started to drum out a beat. Gisella finished writing down the riff and joined in herself. The lyrics just started to flow, like a stream of music. In those moments, revenge turned petty and they just enjoyed playing together as a band. Gisella sang about just having fun with her friends, her sweet and calming voice enhanced by Ivanna's back up singing. Larissa smiled as she kept focus on her drums, content with the small session. Music echoed through the halls of Larissa's house, reverberating in harmony. After three full minutes of just straight playing and singing, the three of them laid back and laughed. They sat there, happily sighing.
Gisella's eyes lit up as she quickly scrambled around for paper to write down their session. Her joy turned to fear as she couldn't find a pen. "Girls! Help me fnd something to write with!" The other two scrambled around, looking for anything to write with, but no avail.
"Argh! I can't find anything!" Ivanna exclaimed.
"Where the hell is that pen, mon?!"
Gisella held her head in anguish. "Nonononono! Augh! We're going to forget that song!" She actually began to feel tears well up in her eyes, but then Ivanna chimed in. Ivanna had stopped panicking and turned to the steadily beeping camera on Larissa's desk.
"Hey, isn't that camera recording?"
August 7, 2011
"Ah, just look at our numbers grow!" Ivanna exclaimed, looking at her phone. She had the website for the Battle of the Bands pulled up with the number of voters between the Bad Good Girls and the Cat Daddies. "We're really pulling ahead."
"Guess we can save that previous song we wrote for next month, mon," Larissa said, twirling her knife as she prepared some chopped steak on the grill. "I do like the name of the song, 'Bring on the Band.'"
Gisella smiled and sipped her glass of Caribbean Splash. "Yeah, it was a good song choice. I've heard plenty of people around town talking about it. In fact, the mall was playing our song, but I don't think people have recognized us and our band to the song yet. Some people really are surprised to learn that I'm part of the Bad Good Girls."
"Ugh, YOU are part of that phenomenal band!?" exclaimed a familiar, yet unwanted voice behind Ivanna and Gisella. The two of them turned around to find themselves face to face with long cherry blonde hair and designer clothes. "As if you three untalented losers could do something like that."
"Hey, I got about half a mind to slice you up right now and serve you to the sugarcane snakes, mon!" Larissa exclaimed, slamming her knife on the grill.
"Oh really? I guess that would be half a mind more than usual," Rosa insulted, making Larissa let out a soft growl.
"What do you want, Rosa?" Ivanna asked, sipping her glass of Caribbean Splash, "You may be a social butterfly, but you don't really come over to this garden."
"Ooh, aren't we just so smart. You can make plant references, whoop de doo," Rosa snarked, rolling her eyes.
Gisella leered at Rosa. "Look, just tell us what you want, Rosa."
Rosa laughed and picked up a menu. "Am I not allowed to simply eat here at this establishment?"
"Well... yes, mon," Larissa stated, still softly growling, "What do you want?"
"I don't know. How about you surprise me with something decent?"
Larissa slammed her knife on the grill and pulled out some chicken and rice. She danced her knife across the metal rink as she cooked the meats, throwing in vegetables and spices. "I'll give you something decent, you little rat, mon."
Gisella sighed and turned to Rosa. "Rosa, tell me, why did you date Tyrell? Why did you have to ruin everything? I've been dating him for the past four years!" She slammed her glass on the counter, just lightly enough to not crack it.
"YOU'VE been dating him for the past four year? Try the past one year. I've been dating him for four years!"
"What!? But... I've been dating him since April 17, 2007!"
"WHAT!? That's when I started dating him!"
"You mean," Ivanna interrupted, "he's been cheating on both of you with each other for the past four years!?"
August 14, 2011
"I am going to take that little pompous prick down personally, mon!" Larissa exclaimed. She picked up another kitchen knife and, without hesitation, threw them at a picture of Tyrell's face that Gisella had given her square in the face.
"Now Larissa, be nice," Ivanna said, strumming her guitar, "we both know that you have to wait your turn. Gisella's going first."
Gisella was furiously typing away at Larissa's computer, searching the Battle of the Bands website for Tyrell's band. "I can't even find that band of his on here."
Ivanna put down her guitar and walked over, "Maybe he's registered under another band name. That one name, Dragon Crush or whatever, isn't on there?"
"No, there’s nothing like that anywhere on here. I can't even seem to find the video submission that he did."
"Well, maybe he did one of those live amp to amp shows that the announcer said about," Ivanna stated, taking hold of the keyboard and mouse. She scrolled around the site, searching for any information. "Looks like the winners of the amp vs amp battles this month were..." she paused, waiting for Larissa to finish her knife throwing, "Penny Quarter, Full Forced, Fuzion, and the Dead Rights."
"Only four bands, mon?" Larissa asked, laying down on her bed.
"So it would seem," Gisella replied, joining Larissa on her bed. She picked up her bad leg with her arms onto the bed and leaned against the headrest.
Ivanna took a seat in the chair in the corner and picked her guitar back up. "Think we should practice our next song for the next round? It's already clear that we beat out the Cat Daddies."
"I'm not really feeling in the mood right now," Gisella sighed. She rubbed her bad leg and adjusted her brace. The light from the window reflected off her orange soccer jersey. "College is starting back up soon, and that's just going to be such a hassle to deal with along with this Battle of the Bands competition."
"That it is. I mean, it doesn't start up until about part-way into September, so, that's good. After all, we are ahead of the game because we already have our song for the next round." Ivanna strummed her guitar, letting the chord play itself all the way through.
"Hey, don't you worry, mon," Larissa said, wrapping her arm around Gisella's shoulder, "We're going to get you even with him. You can count on it. This is gonna be big."
"Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the 29th Battle of the Bands Year-Long Extravaganza!" shouted an exuberant announcer from the TV. A roar of applause came from the audience.
